History of the Zoo
In 1928 a small zoo corner opened on the site of today’s Nizami Park. The zoological park was established there in 1942. Until the 1980s it operated on a 1-hectare site in Bayil, and in 1982 it received 2.25 hectares; the area was extended by another 2 hectares in 2001. The zoo has been a member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1995.
Major reconstruction began in 2017 and lasted about four years. The renovated zoo reopened in October 2021. The new enclosures are designed to be closer to the animals’ natural environment, and the zoo aims to become an education, research and conservation centre. It no longer takes in new animals, except confiscated or rescued wild ones.
