Before traveling to Azerbaijan, it is worth learning the rules for staying in the country. One of the key requirements is registration at your place of stay. It is mandatory for those who remain in the country longer than a certain period.

When registration is required
Foreign citizens who stay in Azerbaijan for more than 15 days must register at their place of stay. For citizens of Kazakhstan, this period is 30 days. You must apply within 15 days of entering the country (within 30 days for citizens of Kazakhstan).
If your stay does not exceed 15 days (30 days for citizens of Kazakhstan), registration is not required.
Registration is free of charge. Failing to register on time may lead to administrative liability.
How to register
- Online, through the electronic services section of the State Migration Service website: migration.gov.az
- By email: qeydiyyat@migration.gov.az
- In person at a regional office of the State Migration Service or at an ASAN service center. In Baku, the main office is at 202 Binagadi Highway (near the Azadliq Prospekti metro station).
You will need an application form and a copy of your passport, including the visa page and the page showing your latest entry stamp.
The State Migration Service recommends asking your host (hotel, hostel or landlord) to register you immediately after arrival. If you change your place of stay, you must register at the new address within 5 working days.
Extending your stay
Your temporary stay can be extended only in exceptional cases, for example if you need urgent medical treatment or a close relative is seriously ill. Apply to the State Migration Service at least 3 working days before your permitted stay expires. An extension can be granted for up to 60 days.
Medical insurance
Medical care for foreign tourists in Azerbaijan is generally paid, and hospitals often require payment upfront. Quality and availability of care are lower outside Baku, so it is best to arrange travel insurance that covers emergency treatment and medical evacuation before your trip. The emergency medical number is 103.
Currency and payments
The national currency is the Azerbaijani manat (AZN), and it is the only currency accepted in shops and cafés. You can exchange US dollars and euros at banks, licensed exchange offices and airports. In Baku, cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and stores, but it is best to carry cash for markets and trips outside the capital.
Tips for tourists
- Work out your registration deadline from your entry date. The State Migration Service website has a deadline calculator.
- Check current rules only on the official website, migration.gov.az.
- Carry your passport with you. Migration officers can ask to see your ID and documents confirming that your stay is legal.
- For help, call the State Migration Service call center at 919 within Azerbaijan, or +994 12 565 61 17 from abroad.
Registration of foreigners is a simple but important formality. Prepare in advance and enjoy your trip through sunny Azerbaijan!
