The famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, after seeing the boat petroglyphs at Gobustan, put forward a bold hypothesis: the ancestors of the Scandinavians may have come north from the territory of present-day Azerbaijan. He believed that the word "Aesir" (the name of the Norse gods) sounds like the name of the country, and that Odin was not a myth but a real chieftain who came from the Caucasus.

Most scholars do not support this hypothesis, and the question remains disputed. But one Scandinavian passion has genuinely taken root in Azerbaijan: skiing. Today the country has two major ski resorts, both on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus.

How the ski resorts appeared

Modern winter tourism in Azerbaijan began to develop in the early 2010s, when the state made it a priority. Shahdag in the Qusar district opened first, at the turn of 2011 and 2012, followed a little later by Tufandag near Gabala. Since then, ski resorts in Azerbaijan have become a familiar destination for both locals and international visitors.

Shahdag: the first and the largest

Shahdag is named after a 4,243-meter mountain and is located within a national park. It is the country's largest resort, with about 45 km of slopes, roughly half of them intermediate, so it suits both beginners and experienced skiers. All slopes can be covered with artificial snow, and a rescue service operates on the runs.

Besides skiing, there is the Shahdag Coaster, pedestrian lifts, kids' karting and a cinema. The resort has several hotels, including Shahdag Hotel & Spa and Zirve Hotel, which has a medical center.

Tufandag: slopes and panoramas

The resort is a few kilometers from Gabala. It has runs for beginners, intermediates and professionals, with the steepest gradients exceeding 40°. A cable car rises to almost 1,900 meters, where a viewing platform offers views of snow-capped ridges of the Greater Caucasus.

Besides skiing, you can try tubing and sledding, ride a snowmobile, swing above the gorge on the mountain swings, or have a bite of traditional Azerbaijani food at the café near the lift. Accommodation includes hotels such as the Qafqaz Tufandag Mountain Resort Hotel.

How to get there

To Shahdag: the resort is about 212 km from Baku, roughly a 3-hour drive. You can also take a bus from the Baku International Bus Terminal to Qusar (according to the resort, buses run every half hour from 07:00 to 18:00) and then a taxi. Transfers are also available through the resort.

To Tufandag: first get to Gabala by bus or car, then take a taxi for the last few kilometers.

Because of the distance to Shahdag, it is better to stay overnight than to try a day trip.

Ski season

At Shahdag, the winter season usually begins in the second half of December and lasts until early April. At Tufandag it generally runs from December to March. Exact dates depend on snow, so check lift schedules and slope conditions on the official websites: shahdag.az and tufandag.com. Current prices for lift passes and equipment rental are listed there too.

Not just in winter

Both resorts operate year-round. In summer, Shahdag offers hiking, cycling and cable car rides, while Tufandag offers hiking, cycling and paragliding.

Health and active leisure

Alpine skiing works all muscle groups and develops coordination and endurance. It is a great way to spend an active vacation. If you are new to skiing, start with lessons: both resorts have instructors and equipment rental.
